Mt. Wilhelm - Research and Conservation Area

Conservation

The summit area above 3200 m asl. is protected as the Mt. Wilhelm National Park., including the top two stations of out transect. The National Park includes unique alpine ecosystems, but does not cover a majority of biodiversity that is found in rainforests on the mountain’s lower slopes.

BRC is working with landowner communities along the elevation transect to establish the Mt. Wilhelm Conservation Area that will expand the National Park and preserve rainforest areas from all altitudinal zones.

This project is modelled on the successful Wanang Conservation Area. The landowners will set aside part of their rainforests in exchange for income generated by supporting research activities on their lands. This support includes field assistants, accommodation, porters, access to land and other services.
